Second Look at Thornton Gives the Brewers the Edge Against the Mets

Citi Field opens a midweek set with two left-handers whose first meeting still controls the storyline. Zac Thornton quieted Milwaukee in July; the Brewers have since seen the tape. That second look is the game within the game.

Mets: a lineup missing its anchors, a bullpen searching for order

The Mets are in a development phase rather than a contender’s stretch run. Interim manager Andy Green is rotating younger pieces through first base, third base and designated hitter, and the injury list on mlb.com shows Juan Soto, Jorge Polanco and Devin Williams among the absences.

Zac Thornton is listed to start for New York. His latest outing was less clean than the Milwaukee start, but Green liked the deeper curveball shape and said it “really opens things up,” as mlb.com reported.

Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., Marcus Semien and Francisco Alvarez give New York right-handed options against a lefty. Robert’s Saturday power was a confidence signal after an injury-disrupted season, and Carson Benge remains the most consistent young X-factor.

Sunday was harder to explain. The Mets generated baserunners but repeatedly failed to convert them, then lost on a walk-off after tying the game in the ninth. Kodai Senga and Jefry Yan both surrendered weekend walk-offs, leaving the ninth-inning hierarchy unsettled.

Brewers: a fresher closer and a roster in better repair

Milwaukee is protecting its position atop the NL Central and shaping a postseason rotation. The Brewers recently produced a historic rout of Seattle, then shifted back into close, pitching-oriented wins against Atlanta. Christian Yelich described the rout simply: “It was kind of crazy, and it happened fast.”

Kyle Harrison is listed to start on the road. He has made three starts since returning from left forearm tightness without a reported recurrence, and his latest appearance was a sharp rebound with swing-and-miss stuff back. The extra recovery day after Monday’s off-day is useful for a pitcher still being managed carefully.

Milwaukee’s lineup decisions matter. Garrett Mitchell is day-to-day after taking a pitch off the forearm, Jake Bauers has right-foot soreness, and Sal Frelick could be activated during this series, per mlb.com. William Contreras remains central, and Luis Lara has become a meaningful defensive and energy piece.

Trevor Megill enters notably fresher than most of the setup group after closing Friday and not pitching again. DL Hall and Aaron Ashby worked both weekend days, while Abner Uribe and JoJo Romero remain unavailable, making the bridge in front of Megill the softest part of the bullpen.

Citi Field and the night conditions

Citi Field’s deep alleys ask hitters to earn opposite-field and center-field home runs. A cooler evening can turn marginal fly balls into playable contact, which puts a premium on outfield range.

The forecast calls for a possible isolated shower, with delay risk more relevant than postponement. Same-day wind direction remains the main variable, but there is no indication of a prolonged rain event.

The second look is the edge

Thornton’s July success against Milwaukee came before the Brewers had a full in-game adjustment plan. That prior performance is seductive, but a second look at his fastball/curve sequencing swings the balance in Milwaukee’s favor.

The Brewers’ deep right-handed contact group can test whether the emphasized curveball consistently lands for strikes. If it does not, Harrison’s swing-and-miss profile gives the road side a starter who can blunt New York’s platoon adjustments.

The Mets’ missing bats and unsettled ninth only widen the gap. New York’s late-game structure is vulnerable after Senga and Yan each failed over the weekend, while Milwaukee’s fresher closer and broader roster point to the road team.

The obvious risks are Harrison’s post-injury workload ceiling and a possible rain delay that shortens the game. Neither is enough to desert the Brewers in a matchup the home side enters shorthanded.
