Shuai Zhang and Leylah Annie Fernandez meet in the first round of the US Open on Sunday at 16:30 UTC. Fernandez, ranked 32 to Zhang's 53, is the favourite by a comfortable distance on the board. The more useful question is not who wins, but by how much.
Two Augusts that never quite settled
Zhang's Toronto week was her best of the swing. She never let Putintseva lead, took ten straight games off Ostapenko before the retirement, then pushed Sabalenka to 3-6 4-6, with the world number one calling the match tricky afterwards. The Monterrey exit to Timofeeva, 1-6 3-6, was the reverse: flat timing, no return pressure at all.
Fernandez owns the higher peak and the less stable week. She beat Andreeva 6-1 6-4 in Toronto, lost a close one to Osaka, then went 6-3 2-6 2-6 down to Xiyu Wang in Cincinnati after controlling the opening set. In Washington she led Eala 5-1 in the second and served for it twice without finishing.
The margin is the story
Fernandez's closing process is the recurring detail. She builds commanding positions and gives games back, and Zhang, who takes the return early and redirects pace off the backhand, is the wrong opponent to hand free games to. A start of three and a half games covers every three-set outcome, any set Zhang steals, and a tight straight-sets loss with a tiebreak.
The risk is the Monterrey version of Zhang, who offers very little once her contact point deserts her. Taking the games rather than the outright win is the sober way to price that.
