Kaitlin Quevedo meets Elise Mertens in the US Open first round on Monday at 15:00 UTC, a main-draw debut against a player with a long New York record. The ranking gap reads 107 against 24. The scheduling gap runs firmly the other way.

One player rested, one still in transit

Quevedo's summer belongs to clay. She reached the Targu Mures final and led there before losing 6-2 3-6 1-6 to Laura Samson, and her only hard-court test since was Philadelphia, a 1-6 6-0 6-7(5) defeat to Ekaterina Ovcharenko: a poor opening, a total reset, a lost tiebreak.

Mertens contested the Monterrey final on Sunday, going down 4-6 6-0 3-6 to Diane Parry a day after recovering from 1-6 down against Nikola Bartunkova. She left saying the match volume had restored her timing. It also cost her a full week of tennis and a flight from Mexico.

Where the 5.5 games actually sit

Mertens is the better player and should win. The questionable part is the assumption of a clean afternoon: her North American swing has produced a lost set or a badly mismanaged patch against Bondar, Udvardy, Bartunkova and Parry twice, and tired legs tend to show up as loose service games rather than as a collapse.

Quevedo arrives fresh, grew up on American hard courts and is content to extend rallies. She does not need to win the match. One set, or two tight ones, and the handicap lands.

Prediction: Quevedo +5.5 games, odds 1.86
