De Stefano survives, Samson takes control
De Stefano escaped Alice Tubello, the world No. 242, by 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4 after trailing 2–5 down in the second set and saving match point. It was excellent competitive work on clay, but it lasted almost three hours, included eight breaks of serve conceded and supplied no aces.
Samson’s quarterfinal was considerably tidier. The world No. 118 beat Anastasiia Sobolieva 6-4 6-1 in 74 minutes, increasing her return pressure after an uncertain start. She also won the WTA 125 title in Târgu Mureș last month, so the later rounds of a clay event are familiar territory rather than a new administrative problem.
Freshness should sharpen Samson’s forehand edge
De Stefano’s left-handed forehand can push Samson into repeated backhand exchanges, but that pattern requires depth and reliable movement. Short balls will allow Samson to step around and dictate with her preferred forehand, while De Stefano’s vulnerable second serve offers an obvious entry point.
De Stefano has made a habit of recovering from poor positions, so Samson cannot treat an early lead as finished business. Still, the ranking advantage, stronger serve and sharply lighter Friday workload all point the same way. At 1.51, the straightforward match-winner price is preferable to asking Samson to cover a game handicap.
