Pegula came here off a Washington final that rain split across two days, then travelled immediately and needed three sets in her opening match in Toronto. Her recent wins have followed a consistent shape: a flat opening set, then a correction once she starts taking the ball earlier.
Shnaider is in her best condition for several weeks. She beat Kalinskaya without ever having to rescue the match and settled an old debt against Samsonova, and the left-handed serve into the corners is the shot that keeps her holding while the American is still adjusting. In Washington she broke in both sets and still lost.
Why 21.5 looks like a short number
The pattern of this matchup is remarkably stable. Pegula finds the answer, but she finds it late and by a margin of four or five games: 7-5 6-4 in Washington is 22 games on its own, and Charleston went to a deciding set with a break saved.
Nothing in the current form of either player suggests a tidy 6-3 6-2. Two long sets clear the line, three sets clear it comfortably, and a tired favourite who habitually gives away the first set makes the second scenario entirely ordinary.
