Two recoveries, neither entirely comfortable

Bondar spent more than three hours beating Alina Charaeva 6-4 6-7(6) 7-6(5), saving a match point in the decider. That is a demanding route into another outdoor hard-court match, but it also follows her narrow US Open loss to Madison Keys, whom she pushed to a deciding tiebreak.

Ruse was much cleaner against Eva Lys, winning 6-1 6-2, then needed three sets to get past wild card Yeonwoo Ku. She fell behind in the second set before recovering; Ku’s thigh trouble in the decider makes the final 6-1 less persuasive as evidence of complete control.

The margin matters more than the favourite

Bondar’s recovery is the clear risk. Ruse, though, has played doubles this week and had to spend more than two hours getting past Ku. Neither arrives with an uncomplicated claim to fresher legs.

Bondar has shown she can stay close through changes of momentum, and her willingness to attack second serves gives her a way into Ruse’s service games. Ruse may still win, but a comfortable margin asks more of her than this week’s uneven play supports. The +2.5 games gives Bondar useful cover without requiring her to take the match.
